Title: Misthaven(Non-Epic Battle Board Suggestion) Battle Host: Castellan.
Post by: Tyvaris on March 30, 2010, 05:52:43 PM
MISTHAVEN

(NON-EPIC Board Battle Suggestion) NOTE: THIS SUGGESTION WILL REMAIN OPEN TIL APRIL 30TH.  If no interest is shown I will save the idea for a fictional setting for story writing.

First I must ask you; do you ever wonder what life would be like to Fantasy fiction races like Elves, Dwarves, Orks and the corruptible Humans if say drastic advances in technology were to form and change the way of life for all.   I'm not familiar with all aspects of much fantasy literature and of D&D and only vaguely aware of other genres so if this is "Steam Punk" or if this is "Ebberon" let me know but imagine this as you will an Age of Steam, an Age of Gunpowder, an Age of Reason, and an Age of War for the classic fantasy races.  A meshing of old and new.   Dwarves in Gyro-Copters, and Humans in prop-driven aeroplanes akin to rustic World War One Bi-planes, Imagine Elves in majestic airships, and Orks bastardizing all these to make choking black smoke spewing dirigibles that transcend the skies above bristling cities miles apart.  Imagine, steam ships with great Mississippi River Mark Twain style side paddle wheels chugging across vast seas and into battle.  Great sea fairing ships that wage battles with broadsides of cannon fire where the mettle of the free races is tested with wood, iron and steam.  This is the world of the Five Realms and the World of Misthaven.

Misthaven, where men are much like Musketeers of the Renaissance with archaic gunpowder muskets and where the Pike is the dominant weapon on the battlefield.  Where Dwarves are tinkering machinists creating new devices of wonder, Gyrocopters, Steam-Drills, Cannons, Land Warships(Wooden Steamtanks).   Elves, who develop great airships and elegant aeroplanes to command the skies majestically.  Orks covered in rusty armor menacing all; raiding and pillaging from grimy zeppelins, foul copters, and a multitude of pieced together flying deathtraps.

The old fantasy world of yesteryear is shed for the technological advances of steam, gunpowder, air power.  By pasted is the Age of Rail, with great flying planes and airships traversing the skies in caravans knowledge is quickly acquired, goods are traded, and new wars are waged.  Soon flying machines are outfitted for war.  Air pirates take to the skies to raid and plunder.   Flying caravans are attacked and airships captured and pillaged.  Soon caravans stick to flying in great convoys with aeroplane escorts.

Cities which still do not have speedy means to traverse on ground must rely on squadrons of defensive aerial vehicles to repel raiders.   Misthaven has the most famous in the Realms, the Red Guard.  An aero force of Elves, Dwarves, and Men who are employed by the Lord of Misthaven to defend against all threats.  The Red Guard whose aeroplanes have wings of red cloth attached to skeletons of wood and upon the wings the great crest of Misthaven the Eagle with its wings outstretched in a circle of white.  Many a battle have the aero force of the Red Guard fought and countless brave souls fell in burning hulks from the sky.   The flying machines are frail and many do not return back to the Aerodromes.  Only the most daring and courageous dare temp the fury of clouds and wind.  Great watchtowers have benn constructed to count the planes as they return and to pan the skies for enemy aero forces.

Nestled in the snow capped mountains of of the Five Realms lies the captivating city-state of Misthaven.  A sanctuary for the free folk of the Realms from the ever growing menace of the greenskin, the marauder and other fiendish folk.  The city has many great watchtowers as the threats come now from the sky more than from the ground, these towers also act as docking points for the many airships that dock to drop passengers and cargo.

Misthaven is a typical city with an elaborate and ornate Keep at its center where the Lord Dominik sits atop a jade throne.  The citizens are an amalgamation of cultures and species not always living in harmony but with the Red Guard in the skies and the Black Wardens watching the streets life in Misthaven is peaceful and jovial.  In every city there is always a tucked away spot where the ruffians of society can plot, thieve and brood, namely this would be the bristling warehouse, and wharf districts where the seafaring ship masters are looked upon with less respect than their aerial brethren.

Misthaven is considered one of the most beautiful citystates in the Realms by all whom pass through its mist enshrouded walls. Great tapestries hang from all the buildings as long have the years been since man, dwarf and elf have spent toiling most of their lives fighting to survive.  This is an age of artistic expression.  One can not find a building top without an ornate Gargoyle or grand statue.  Great Gothic arches and tall columns hold vast structures of granite and limestone up from the earth.  Great buttressed cathedrals and mosques intersperse the city with shimmering stained glass depicting the deities of many races. The wide cobblestone streets are interspersed with great canals of water that flow with fresh water from the great Misty Falls for which the city-state gets its name.  Gondolas take many through the city with great poles pushed into the water bed to gently glide along peacefully, or you could take a less luxurious trip on a dwarf steamboat.  Splendor greats the eyes at every turn of the head and many who visit refuse to leave becoming one of the many tradesmen or artists employed by the Royal Court to imbue it with a magnificence unseen in all the realms.

From the Snow capped mountains pours the entrancing waterfalls that fall around the citystate throwing great plumes of mist and creating a natural defensive moat around the city before it swells into great tributaries that flow away from the granite walls.  The Misthaven is a city of trade and as such has the largest Aerodrome in the Realms.  To the south whence the water flows away to the sea and the great peaks open in a valley and forms the only approach for aeroplanes.  To either side of this southern expanse lies great watchtowers guarded round the clock by men of the Black Wardens.   The sacred order of Wardens who have pledged their services to the Crown to defend the Lord of the Royal Court.  The men of the Black Warden are armed with the Pistol and the rapier and are never afraid to use one or the other to defend the city or the Lord.

Misthaven has not been at war for sometime and many feel that possibly the Red Guard should be disbanded but always dark clouds loom and wolves roam beyond the light of campfire.  Several believe that the old and feeble Lord Dominik's mind is becoming weak or that he is obsessed with his gradiose city.  Plotting lesser lords have already begun secretly posturing to make moves once the Lord's life fails or when an assassin's blade is driven into  his unsuspecting back.  Misthaven for all its grandeur is filled with intrigue, danger, and most of all  adventure.

Long have you journeyed on calloused feet my friend, spread a new set of wings and take flight over the majestic skies of Misthaven.

Characters could be almost anything.  Steam Mechanics, Loner Pilots, Aero pirates, Red Guard(Without being the leader), Black Wardens, Soldiers or Aero mercenaires.

The Setting is Light magical... No characters can start with magical powers although magical items may end up the hands of the characters they will not start with them.

Characters can have medieval style weapons and/or single shot Blackpowder weapons, pistols, Muskets, although if u can create a more creative type of weapon that may fit your character's persona that also works but needs to be approved by me.     Armor is allowed and can be as interesting as you  like it to be but must fit the story line.  Magic isn't the focus of the story and neither are uber characters, the story will be plot driven and with a world like Misthaven anything can happen.

The main goal is to get characters to explore Misthaven and solve problems(or create them) , get into the air for some exhilerating aerial dogfights, sneak into Ork lands to steal a necessary piece of stolen technology or any number of plots to have fun with.   Let me know if you like the idea of this Board Battle and Post a reply.   I didn't want to do fantasy and I didn't want to do Sci-Fi so I figured what the hell and tried to do something slightly original.  This is only the suggestion, I would create a more expansive history and populate the world with NPCs if battlers are interested in the setting.    Well let me know.

I actually really like the sound of this idea and would be interested in joining.

I already can see a char concept forming in my head, an obsessed human steam mechanic who is into everything mechanical, and is obsessed with improving and building large amount of technology, furthering the concepts of things. Let me know what you think! :D

But overall, i would love to join something like this.

Is at least 6 people a good number to have for a Board Battle to start?  Any idea?  How many people should be interested before a Battle should take place?

Honestly, a good Board Battle is very much like a good D&D campaign. As long as you have at least 2 people, you can run with it. I'll throw up your poll later today. For now, feel free to continue discussing the setting and possible character ideas/restrictions here.

This is a setting I would like to explore.  I already have a few characters and backstories brewing in my head.

If it gets enough intrest I'd probably wanna start the Battle/Story out in late April or May.  I'd have to flesh out settings, create NPCs, and develope enemies simple and complex.  The goal being to have one battle going on at a time but being a patchwork of vignette stories for the characters to partake in.  So that if interest picks up characters can join or leave after each story and not be required to join in on the next one.  The characters would be the same, but say it could take place at a different point of time in the setting.   Sorta in an anime sense of things be like Cowboy Bebop and have episodic stories that may or may not link to one another, but in the same setting.     I'll keep everyone in the loop and when the Battle goes live I'd hope to have three threads in the Board: one for OOC, one for the Battle, and one for History/Setting Battle Info.   I'll outline character information in the Setting Info and they will be submitted through the Character Board and Approved but do not post your character ideas yet until I create a thread for that if the idea comes to fruition.

Anyways... I'll post some more stuff soon.  Give everyone a better glimpse of the Misthaven setting as I'll peal away the silver lining and show you the darker side of the setting.

I have changed the Open date til the 30th. Beginning around the 30th I will attempt to have enough information out so that Characters can be submitted for approval before the TBA start date of the battle.  So far I have 3 Votes + my personal vote to do the Board Battle.  This I believe is enough to make this an official Board Battle.  Expect information to be posted anytime from now till mid-May.  The Board will not officially start until Mid-May or Beginning of June as there is a lot of work to be done.  I plan to make a couple maps, a detailed history, and maybe a sketch or two of aero-planes/copters.    Will depend on how much free time I have in the future.   Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE to MISTHAVEN.

Current plans are to post character creation info by Sunday May 2nd so that characters can be created.  If enough are submitted by May 15th on that date a yet to be named Misthaven Board Battle will begin.  If not enough characters can be posted by then I will postpone it another week.   Please keep your eye out for the Character Creation Thread.

New info will come out about Character creation hopefully by Sunday.  I'll post Magic related stuff, Race Info and hopefully a Map of the Misthaven surrounds.  I don't mind if your character comes from a small hamlet or elve village, etc that isn't named on the map if you want to make your own home setting that is fine as long as you can explain enough about how your character came to be in Misthaven or even that much isn't necessary.   A map namely of the lower level areas of MH will probably be done then too.

The first story will only briefly take part in MH and will venture out into the surrounding area.   I need to create the map of the lower level as that is where everyones character will be located prior to the story commencing.    The first chapter will be essentially gathering the cast members together.  When I say the Lower Level it is the lower level of a two level city.   The lower level is where most of the city dwellers live, where commerce is conducted, and where stadiums and temples are located.  Pretty much the moving parts of the city, warehouse districts, slums and docks.   The upper level is like the government areas and where the higher echelon members of society live.  It's the location of the Senate(Council sorta place not sure of name yet) and where the royal palace is located.

The first story will not take place in the Upper Level at all.

The SUGGESTION Thread that was created was merely the suggestion for the setting idea and the story.  It could be taken as a brief possiblity of what the sitting is like but shouldn't be considered Canon. I have every intent to change and build upon a lot of things.   Especially the depiction of Orcs as bumbling creatures.  I intend to post all the setting info in the Setting Thread and Character Creation info in the Character Thread by this weekend.

Ya know, I was thinking of something similar.  I was going to play a Dwarf with a steam/clockwork powered backpack and giant gauntlet guns that are fueled by coal.  =P

I apologize.  I tried to get the info out by yesterday but got kicked off the PC by my Girlfriend who needed it to work on college paper.   I did complete the map of the Five Realms so I will try to get it online probably Tuesday 05-04-10.   I am probably gonna push back the start of the Misthaven Board back by one week tentatively.  It namely depends on how fast I can push out the location info so that players can create characters.   I won't have much chance today(Monday) as the GF needs the PC again after work.   Hopefully the wait will be worth it though.   I do have the complete outline for the first story and can't wait to get it underway.  If I can't seem to get things out fast enough in relation to the creation of places or fluff type stuff I might turn to creative input by the battlers.

I may leave a lot of the setting Vague for the First BB and just put out enough so characters have a good enough place to build a foundation for themselves.

One note for those taking part, I've decided to make the First Story take place 10 years before sorta the original concept description so if you plan to use your character again later on think about them 10 years younger.  For Dwarves or Elves this isn't a problem but if you wanted to make a middle aged male try to make them late teens to early 20s.   I'm doing this because I don't want too much steam tech to be used in this story.  I don't want the tech to tell the story or take over it and be the solution to everything.  I want characters to be able to solve things on there own.   I'll make it all apparent when I post the setting details.

I have to finish the setting info first as that will correlate with Character creation.   I originally planned to post both yesterday, but haven't had the available time that I wanted to put into it.   I want to make an engrossing world that has it's own feel and history.    It's not really as easy as I thought it would be.   I am gonna probably post the map of the area and then a description of each of the areas presented on the map.  If a character would like to come from a different area that is altogether fine as long as the area is approved and it's location can be added to the setting description.   The character Creation guidelines should contain enough about all the races that will be playable for characters.  There won't be too many, as I don't want to allow a bunch of magical beings and strange races of modern D&D types, just yet.   I think the following list will be the final approved:

Dwarves(Classical Cave Dwelling)

Neo Dwarves(New Tech oriented live above ground)

Elves(Disappearing race most leaving the world do not believe in modern tech believe it will lead to the downfall of all species.)

Half Elves(A race of semi long lasting, sharing qualities of both elves and humans, not liked by Dark Elves and some resentment from Humans.)

Humans(Too many types to list, Tech, Barbarians, Imperial Humans(sorta like Romans), Pirates(not exactly your ARG variety)

Halflings(not all that common but a resiliant people, perfect pilots because of their light weight and size )

If anything else changes I'll let you guys know.  This will give everyone hopefully a little basis for thinking up a character.   Expect something soon in both the Setting and Character Guidelines boards.

NOTE: I have removed Dark Elves as a playable character option.  Dark Elves are pretty dark they are sadistic and cruel and refuse to work with any race besides there own.  Characters may encounter them in not so plesant terms.  I have removed them because I don't mind some minor hostility in a character group but I believe having a Dark Elve will make a group trying to work as a team not function.   I want characters to work together to solve problems not fight amongst themselves no matter how much that would make an interesting plot arch.

Either a halfling co-pilot that knows a good bit about gunpowder and jelly donuts....or a human sailor on a naval vessel who is fond of a good old-fashioned sea skirmish.  Not sure...still thinking of all the possibilities.

I didn't know where to put this, but here it is.

I won't be able to access a PC from the 21st until the 24th of May.  And it will be iffy the 25th and 26th.

I know the character creation deadline is the 20th, but I couldn't find when the start date of the adventure was.  I wouldn't want Darterity to miss out on any bar room schenanigans in my absence!

Thats, fine. I'll post the story introduction that weekend, but there will probably be a week for people to digest the start and figure out how they'd like to join in.
I'm sorry if the date says 20th, I meant friday 21st for final entries.

Still can if you want.  I might have to postpone the start till after Memorial Day.   If you want I can wait for you Fei and Jharm to create characters.  Only having Four battlers might be a little thin, wasn't planning on using too many NPCs but might have too if there aren't enough crew members.

It's ok.

I started last night and wrote like 6 Paragraphs and really wanted to have a huge epic tie it to the story, but that fell through as it is far too time consuming.  I just tossed it out as being a possible vignette story I'll post later.  Then started again and should have it post this afternoon.

Wrote up a huge battle for my main NPC but it just didn't have anything to do with the current story.  I just thought it would really set the mood and tone for the story to have it start with a climactic battle against Orcs and get a bigger epic feel for the story.  Well the story may remind people a lot of like Red Baron(Flying Circus) meets Pirates of the Carribean meets Indiana Jones meets LOTR.  Action and adventure through and through.

It may be an anticlimactic first post for some though as it has been several months in coming.
