Ok, so with this thread I will attempt to go into greater detail on augmentations. Feel free to utilize sites such as the Deus Ex Wiki (

Mechanical Augmentations (or mechtech): This means that in many cases, the human body part (i.e. hands, arms, legs) were removed and replaced with a mechanical version. In cases as augmentations to organs inside the body, a mechanical device is implanted into the body and attached to the organ in some way to allow it to do things the organ normally would be unable to do on its own. While mechanical augmentation is much more available and used then nanotech, it is viewed by many as a horrific and terrifying idea. Some view people possessing mechtech as less then human or freaks. There have even been reports of terrorist groups forming bent on eliminating augmentation from the face of the planet. There are a number of companies centered around the creation and research into augmentation, the three biggest being AugTech, Horizon Medical, and Nova Industries.
Nano-Augmentation (or nanotech): A new form of augmentation only recently made available. A number of issues cause Nano-augmentation to be incredibly rare. First is that a person must be genetically able to handle the nanites, if not the nanites will be rejected and this generally results in death. The second issue is cost. Being new there are only a few doctors and facilities that can perform the surgeries and such required to create and "install" nanotech, and as such the fees and whatnot required to attempt nano-augmentation are incredibly high.
